And having reasonable discussion about various issues despite disagreeing with almost entirely with everything else he posts is also fine. But they are always presented in such a way as to make it a contentious debate.

Because what we need is a steady stream of incompetent outsiders who have no idea how to legislate or govern?

I support things like ranked choice general elections replacing primaries to make it easier to challenge incumbents but evicting competent and well liked (at least in their districts) candidates just for the heck of it is a pretty bad idea, one that would definitely make government worse and more dominated by lobbyists and other players who can persist and work the system.

And McConnell has been in politics for for 4 6 years (and the Senate for 36).

Point is, the length of time someone has spent in the political field does not necessarily correlate to their efficacy or their ideals or their compassion for others. That is especially true now when there are two sides that are ho tly opposed to each other in regards to “How it should be” TM, and doubly true when both sides are constantly fighting for power.

As for the idea of term limits, there is a down side: We already have too many large corporation lobbyists , and kicking congresspeople out after they learn to do their job well is only asking to create more.

It is by far the most powerful one which is good enough reason to restrict it. It’s also one where it’s easier to get stuff done without experience. And one where the terms are twice as long as the House.

And all that said, I really don’t think we need presidential term limits either. It’s hard to hold power a long time regardless. And we have seen consequences where presidents have been un prepared for major due to the changeover.

I specifically stopped coming on to OPPO for months because it got way too political. Cigar Lounge? No problem, but not on OPPO. I want car culture not the BS the media plasters all over.

Having said that, it was really hard to not notice which political spectrum was over-represented.

So how about this, let’s agree that beer-flavored beer is tasty, cheese and deep frying makes most anything better , and ALL politicians are liars and assholes! God Bless America

Just wait until they use the precedent set by the recent SCOTUS ruling ( sex = sexual orientation / gender identity, even though the bill from the 60s didn’t specifically say that), and then try to use the same concept with the 2nd Amendment .

All of the recent shit is completely calculated and happening by design. The handling of the virus, the civil unrest, the economic fallout. Don’t forget the pandering to black people ( and those that pander to black people) to solicit donations to black people causes, even though the donations don’t actually help black people, but rather go directly to ActBlue, a D fundraising sham.

Notice that PA and MI are two of the states with the most agg ressive economic limitations due to the virus. Also two swing states that will decide the winner of the election. Coincidence? Nah.

I have been on forums that have sub forums for specific categories. Kinja has analogous  capability. I’d like to see Cigar Lounge be the place where political posts go and not have them posted to the oppo main page. That way, we can talk politics when we want and avoid it when we want.

Hey man, fuck the establishment dems, they are all in if for the power anyways. The problem is that America is terrified of s ocialism so social dems are basically a non starters outside of coastal cities. The funny part is that in america soc dems are only barely left of centre, and dems are strong right of centre, with republicans super right and libertarians inbetween the dems and repubs, but still siding with repubs more often than not. Lobbying needs to be illegal, and there needs to be an ethics board that has actual teeth. If un-ethical polititions get shitcanned, maybe we could have some actual democracy, instead of a ruling class that basically is split on abortion vs no abortion.

Go check out the current Alberta provincial government for examples of how “it can’t get any worse” is treated like a dare. I do think term limits are not a bad idea, but I don’t think any limit would be as useful as abolishing lobbyists. pretty much any legislation that has the hands of lobbyists in it is against the well being of the public at large.
